In this tutorial I will take you on a step by step guide to creating the bee and fly image that I used on my portfolio layout. What I originally wanted to do with the layout was to have swirls on the sides like I did in version 1 on Skylish, however, that clearly wasn't working out for me; so on a spur of the moment decision I just decided to try this as my layout had flowers on it xD

To begin with, create a new blank image. My image is sized 458 x 300 and the background is filled with white. Having a solid background will make it easier to see what I'm doing, rather than having that annoying checkered background. I suggest having a solid background to work with and deleting the bottom layer at the end if you want the image to be transparent.

Using () tool, match your settings to mine below:
Top colour pallete: #404040
Second colour pallete: Crosses out
Line style: Solid
Width: 2.50
Anti-alias: Ticked
Segment type: Point to point
Use it to draw four random lines on your image. (Right click and click 'new drawing object' when drawing a new line).

Convert that layer to a raster layer. Next, go to Adjust > Blur > Motion Blur and match your settings to mine:
Angle: 90
Stregnth: 100
Repeat this step.

Set the layer to 20% opacity. Then, duplicate the layer a few times and rearrange the lines. Mirror some lines, flip others, rotate some. Just make sure there are a bunch of lines on your page. Merge each layer down at the end, so that you only have two layers. My example on the left.

Lastly, we just need to make the bee's and flies which is extremely easy to make. To make these we simply use the shape () tool. I'll guide you through making the bee:
  • Match your colour pallete to mine here
  • Match your other settings to mine here
  • Draw a small skinny circle onto your image. Highlight the layer before the vector layer we've just created and draw on another cirle for the wings (make sure your pallet shows white instaed of yellow), we are highlighting the layer before so that the circle appears behind the image.
  • Now, back to the top layer, draw on a face. Make sure on the colour pallet now that both colours are black.
  • Lastly, take () tool, and use similar settings as last time; except this time the line is black (#000000) and the width of the line is 4.00. Draw a line down the middle.
Finally, convert all of your layer into raster layers. Then beginning from the top go to Layers > Merge > Merge Down, and just merge it down enough so that the image of your bee is one image. Create the fly in a similar way, then: duplicate! Duplicate, resize, flip, rotate, whatever. Just having a bunch of bees and flies buzzing around your image!
