In this tutorial I will take you on a step by step guide to creating the an icon similar to the icon displayed on the left. The icon displayed on the left was extremely quick and easy to make, I used lyrics from the N-Dubz song "Wouldn't You", which I was obsessed with at the time.

To begin with, create a new blank image sized 100 x 100. Fill in the background with #F6F7F7 at 100% opacity. Then, duplicate your base layer. Go to Adjust > Add/Remove Noise > Add Noise. Match your settings to mine below:
Random
Monochrome
Noise: 50%
Press OK and set that layer to 50% Opacity - merge all of your layers together.

Next, take the selection tool at a Rectangle Shape and a Feather of 0 and select the top two thirds of your icon. Using the brush tool at a colour of #EDEDED, simply colour in this section.

Now, download a pack of rainbow textures. I have a pack of rainbow textures on my computer and I've had them there for so long - they were downloaded from a Deviant User: Delrium Blaze, his account I can no longer seem to find. This set in particular was very popular back in 2007, and it's what I'll use in this icon. You can download your own rainbow textures from verious sites, here's a selection.

All you do is take your texture, paste it onto your image as a new layer (CTRL+L) and use () tool to resize it until it fits comfortably into your image. I've placed mine in the middle of the coloured background. Set it to 20% opacity then merge together all of your layers.

Using the selection tool again, select an area where you want to add in your text. Once you've selected this are go to Adjust > Brightness and Contrast > Brightness/Contrast; Brighten it so that the colour changes to white. Press OK, then go to Effects > 3D Effects > Drop Shadow; match your settings to mine below:
Vertical and Horizontal: 1
Opacity: 27
Blur: 0.00
Colour: Black
Press OK and use CTRL+D to lock this into place. After, add in your text to the small box. I wrote my text in the font Georgia, at a size of 7 and a colour of #404040.

Lastly, to make it look more exciting, we'll add in a light spot texture. this one, which is available for download on this site. All I did was paste it over my icon as a new layer (CTRL+L), resize it so that it fitted comfortably into my image, and moved it around until I was satisfied, all using () tool. Set the layer to Screen at 100%. After, merge all of your layers together, and you're done!
