In this tutorial I will take you on a step by step guide to creating the an icon similar to the icon displayed on the left. The icon displayed on the left was extremely quick and easy to make. The stock image was from Just Framless.

To begin with, create a new blank image sized 100 x 100. Fill in the background white at 100% opacity. Next, choose a stock image you'd like to use within the icon. The image I used can be found here, try and choose a busy image because an effect we will do later will concentrate the image on one particular thing. Once you've found an image paste it as a new image onto PSP, then go to Image > Resize. Resize it so that the width equals 200 pixels.

We're going to edit it to enhance the colours. Follow these steps below:
  • Duplicate your base layer, set it to Hardlight at 100%.
  • Duplicate the hardlight layer, set it to Screen at 100%.
  • Merge all of your layers.
  • Create a new raster layer, fill it with #FA007C, set it to Soft Light at 50%.
  • Merge all of your layers.
  • Create a new raster layer, fill it with #C0C0C0, set it to Screen at 100%.
  • Merge all of your layers.
  • Duplicate your base layer go to Adjust > Hue and Saturation > Colourize. Change the Saturation to 0 and press OK. Set that layer to Soft Light at 100%.
  • Merge all of your layers.

Copy that image, minimize it, and paste it onto our original image as a new layer (CTRL+L). Use use () tool to move it around the icon until you are satisfied with where it's placed. Take () tool and match your settings to mine below:
Smoothing: 4
Feather: 2
Mode: Replace
Selecion Type: Point to Point
Choose what you want the focus of your image to be, the focus of mine will be the big flower in the bottom right. Select around your focus.

Go to Adjust > Blur > Gaussian Blur and blur it at 1.45, press CTRL+D to lock your dots into place. Then, using () tool again; except at a Feather of 50, select around one corner of your icon as show here, then go to Adjust > Brightness and Contrast > Brightness/Contrast, and "Brighten" it at its darkest.

To make it look a bit more interesting, we're going to add in a light spot texture. I'm using this one, which is available for download on this site. All I did was paste it over my icon as a new layer (CTRL+L), resize it so that it fitted comfortably into my image, and moved it around until I was satisfied, all using () tool. I would suggest for you to only have a few spots showing. Set the layer to Screen at 100%. After, merge all of your layers together, add in text - and you're done!
